Depreciation Calculator
Income Tax depreciation chart for one asset or your full asset list โ with the 180-day rule, sales and capital gains. Add the Companies Act schedule only if you need it.
Already have tax blocks from earlier years? (optional)
Enter the opening written down value (WDV) of each block as on 1 April, taken from last year's tax depreciation chart. New purchases and sales go in the asset list above. The opening WDV you enter replaces any balance worked out from older assets of the same rate.
Your entries stay in this browser only, so you can come back to them.
How the figures are worked out
Income Tax: depreciation is on the written down value (WDV) of each block โ all assets with the same rate form one block. An asset bought and first used for less than 180 days in the year gets half the rate in that year (days are counted from the date first used to 31 March, both days included). Sale value is reduced from the block. If the sale value is more than the block, the excess is a short-term capital gain and the block becomes nil. If every asset in a block is sold, no depreciation is allowed and the balance is a short-term capital loss. Up to FY 2025-26 this follows s. 32 and s. 50 of the Income-tax Act, 1961; from FY 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27) s. 33 and s. 74 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
Companies Act, 2013 (Schedule II): depreciation runs day by day from the date first used, over the useful life, so the first and last years are pro-rated. Straight line (SLM) spreads (cost โ scrap value) evenly over the life. WDV uses the rate 1 โ (scrap รท cost)1/life unless you type your own rate. If an asset is sold, depreciation stops on the date of sale and the profit or loss = sale value โ book value on that date.
Not covered: additional depreciation for new plant & machinery, assets used partly for personal purposes, power-sector SLM, revaluation, impairment and component accounting. Please review the figures before using them in accounts or returns.
