Already have tax blocks from earlier years? (optional)
Enter the opening written down value (WDV) of each block as on 1 April, taken from last year's tax depreciation chart. New purchases and sales go in the asset list above. The opening WDV you enter replaces any balance worked out from older assets of the same rate.

How the figures are worked out
- Income Tax โ block of assets: all assets with the same rate form one block; depreciation is on the block's written down value (WDV). Up to FY 2025-26: s. 32(1)(ii), 2nd proviso to s. 32(1), s. 43(6) and s. 50 of the Income-tax Act, 1961. From FY 2026-27 (Tax Year 2026-27): s. 33(3), s. 33(4), s. 41(1)(c) and s. 74 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.
- 180-day rule: an asset bought and first used for less than 180 days in the year gets half the rate in that year. Days are counted from the date first used to 31 March, both days included (first used on or after 4 October = half rate).
- Opening WDV: a block's WDV as on 1 April that you type replaces the balance worked out from older assets of the same rate. List only purchases and sales from that year onwards.
- Sales: sale value is reduced from the block. If it is more than the block, the excess is a short-term capital gain and the block becomes nil. If every listed asset of a block is sold (and no opening WDV was typed for it), the block ceases and the balance is a short-term capital loss.
- Companies Act, 2013 (Schedule II): book depreciation runs day by day from the date first used over the useful life (actual days in each financial year), and stops on the date of sale. SLM spreads (cost โ scrap value) evenly; WDV uses 1 โ (scrap รท cost)1/life unless you type a rate. Profit or loss on sale = sale value โ book value on that date.
- Book vs tax: the two are calculated separately; the difference is a timing difference for deferred tax (AS 22 / Ind AS 12).
- Not covered: additional depreciation on new plant & machinery, assets used partly for personal purposes, power-sector SLM, unabsorbed depreciation, revaluation, impairment and component accounting. Goodwill is not depreciable for Income Tax.
- Please confirm professionally: when sales in a year are more than the opening WDV plus full-rate additions, this calculator reduces the half-rate additions next; and blocks with a typed opening WDV are never treated as ceased. Review the figures before using them in accounts or returns.
